Best Budget Organic Potting Mix Ingredients

You do not need every ingredient. Start with the basics, then add extras if your budget allows.

Core Ingredients (Recommended)

  1. Peat Moss or Coco Coir - Use one as your main base.

Peat moss - Usually cheaper, holds moisture well.

Coco coir - Renewable and great texture, but can cost more.

Do You Need Lime with Peat Moss?

Yes, usually yes. Peat moss is acidic, so adding garden lime helps balance pH for many plants. A small amount of dolomite lime is commonly added when using peat-based mixes.

If using coco coir: Lime is usually not needed.

  2. Sea Soil Compost - Great source of organic matter and nutrients. Use in moderation as part of the mix. (OR you can use any other compost)

  3. Perlite - Highly recommended for drainage and root airflow.

Optional Ingredients (These can improve the mix, but are not required):

  • Vermiculite - Helps hold extra moisture. Useful for seedlings or plants that dry quickly, but optional if expensive.

  • Worm Castings - Excellent gentle nutrition and microbes, but can be pricey. Use a small amount or skip if cost is high.

  • Blood Meal - Optional nitrogen source for leafy growth. Use lightly.

  • Bone Meal - Optional phosphorus for roots and flowers.

  • Kelp Meal - Optional trace minerals and plant health support.

Budget-Friendly Advice

If you want to keep costs low, use:

  • Peat moss (with lime) or coco coir

  • Compost

  • Perlite

That alone can make a very good mix.

Then upgrade later with castings or other amendments.

Organic Potting Mix Measurements

A simple, effective mix is based on parts, so you can scale it with any container.

Basic Recipe

  • 2 parts peat moss or coco coir

  • 1 part Sea Soil compost

  • 1 part perlite

  • Optional: ½ part vermiculite

  • Optional: ¼ part worm castings

  • Optional with peat moss: lime

That means the base mix is 4 parts total (before optional extras).

Exact Measurements Using a 4 L Bucket (If your 4 L bucket is your measuring container), then use:

Full Batch (fills multiple pots)

  • 2 buckets peat moss / coco coir = 8 L

  • 1 bucket compost = 4 L

  • 1 bucket perlite = 4 L

Optional:

  • ½ bucket vermiculite = 2 L

  • ¼ bucket worm castings = 1 L

If Using Peat Moss Add Lime

  • About 2 to 4 tablespoons dolomite lime for this batch

This makes about 16 L base mix (more with optional ingredients).

Super Easy Scoop Method

Use any scoop/cup:

  • 2 scoops base

  • 1 scoop compost

  • 1 scoop perlite

Optional:

  • ½ scoop vermiculite

  • small handful worm castings

Fertilizer Add-On:

At planting: Add slow-release fertilizer according to label

Then: Liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during growing season

Tip :

  • If the mix dries too fast, add a bit more compost or vermiculite.

  • If it stays too wet, add more perlite.
